Mainstreaming Dugong Conservation: The CBCGDF-OceanWetlands' Effort for Marine Conservation and Action

Image
The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation’s OceanWetlands working group has long been dedicated to mainstreaming marine and wetlands biodiversity, including the species of the dugong (Dugong dugon) and the restoration of its habitats - seagrass ecosystem. In 2022, this commitment was formalized with the establishment of a dedicated dugong task force, 2 months before the alarming announcement by an international scientific team regarding the regional functional extinction of the species in China. In response to this urgent situation, the working group decided to conduct a feasibility study on the reintroduction in the future of dugongs into their native habitats . As an influential media platform in China's marine science community, OceanWetlands has consistently published information on the dugong's species status, population dynamics, and the latest conservation efforts, helping to mainstream the protection of this species. In November 2022, the Oc...

CBCGDF Project Working Group Launches a Comprehensive Investigation to Study the Ecological Restoration and Biodiversity of Mining Areas

Image
In October 2024, the Project Working Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) officially launched the biodiversity investigation project in the two major mining areas of Shouyun and Weike in Miyun District, Beijing, aiming to gain an in-depth understanding of the ecological status of the mining area, identify the transformation difficulties it faces, and provide data support for future ecological restoration and reparation work.   After completing the resource mining task, the mining area often faces a series of ecological restoration and reparation problems. Soil pollution, vegetation destruction, water pollution and loss of biodiversity are all common ecological problems in mining areas. In order to deal with these problems, CBCGDF project working group decided to conduct an in-depth biodiversity investigation on the two major mining areas of Shouyun and Weike in order to find an effective ecological restoration plan.   In or...

CBCGDF Volunteer Discovered a Unique Fern Cyrtomium falcatum in Dongzou Mountain, Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province

Image
Recently, Mr. ZHOU Chong, a volunteer of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), discovered a unique fern on a cliff in Dongzou Mountain, Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province. Its leaves are smooth and leathery on both sides, and circular  spores   are distributed on the back of the pinnae. After careful identification by experts, this fern was confirmed to be   Cyrtomium falcatum ,   belonging to the genus Cyrtomium Presl   of the Dryopteris family, is an extremely rare fern and has been listed in the list of vulnerable (VU) species in the "China Biodiversity Red List - Higher Plants". The new discovery of Cyrtomium falcatum   in Dongzou Mountain, Lianyungang City, not only fills the distribution habitat record of this rare species in Lianyungang City, Jiangsu Province, but also has important scientific and ecological value. This new discovery further enriches the biodiversity resources of Lianyungang City and provides ...

Volunteers from CBCGDF CCAfa in Suihua City and the Local Police Cracked an Illegal Hunting Case and Rescued 30 Wild Birds

Can Dugongs Return to China? Restoring Seagrass Beds and International Cooperation May Hold the Key | Linda Wong's Interview With CGTN

Image
In a recent interview by  China Global Television Network (CGTN), Linda Wong, deputy secretary general of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF)  and Editor-in-Chief of OceanWetlands, emphased on technology and international cooperation in ocean and wetland conservation as both timely and crucial. As we grapple with the escalating challenges posed by climate change and habitat loss, innovative solutions are more imperative than ever. The above image shows a subtle group of dugongs a hundred meters away from the research boat. Studying these marine mammals is incredibly difficult due to their shy nature and elusive behavior. As marine biologist Professor John MK Wong explains, dugongs, unlike dolphins, rarely surface and...
