This Year, the Sand Martins Collectively Abandoned Their Nests, Possibly Caused by a Variety of Reasons | ZHOU Jinfeng Suggests a Quick Investigation of Insects in the Abandoned Nest Area
On the afternoon of July 3, 2024, Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Secretary General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), held a meeting at the Huaihe Wetland in Yuanshi County, Hebei Province on the issue of no sand martin(Riparia riparia) this year.
At the meeting, Zhou Jinfeng pointed out that the reasons for the absence of sand martin may involve many factors, including changes in habitat conditions (such as changes in water levels, ground vegetation and soil conditions), the impact of climate change on the living environment, and the reduction of food sources and changes in the number of regional insects. In order to understand the problem more deeply, Zhou suggested that an investigation of the Huaihe Wetland in Yuanshi County should be launched immediately.
Zhou emphasized that in addition to paying attention to changes in the on-site habitat environment, special investigations should be conducted on the distribution of local insects. He suggested setting up sticky insect boards at the abandoned sand martin nests in Huaihe Wetland, Yuanshi County, to investigate the number and species of local insects in the season, and to keep detailed records and data collection for each survey point, including GPS location, longitude and latitude, altitude, and species distribution. At the same time, a comparative investigation of insects in the normal habitat of sand martin this year should be conducted to draw objective conclusions from the changes in diet.
Afterwards, Zhou once again emphasized the importance of the sand martin species, believing that as an important part of the ecosystem, their disappearance may have an adverse impact on the ecological balance. Protecting sand martin is not only about protecting a bird, but also a key link in maintaining biodiversity, which has a far-reaching impact on the health of the ecosystem.
