The Role of Mountain Ranges in Mitigating the Impacts of Typhoons | CBCGDF Climate Change Working Group

Mountain ranges play a critical role in mitigating the impacts of typhoons, serving as natural barriers that can weaken and disrupt the path of these powerful storms. As typhoons move across the ocean, they gather strength from the warm waters and can cause significant damage when they make landfall. However, when they encounter elevated terrain, the mountains can disrupt the typhoon's structure, reducing its intensity and altering its trajectory.

The orographic effect, where air is forced to rise over mountains, leads to increased precipitation on the windward side of the range. This precipitation can help dissipate the typhoon's energy, as the moisture-laden air releases its water content in the form of heavy rainfall. The leeward side of the mountains often experiences a rain shadow, where the air has already lost much of its moisture, resulting in less rainfall and a reduced risk of flooding.

Moreover, the rugged terrain of mountain ranges can provide shelter for communities and ecosystems, protecting them from the direct force of typhoon winds. The fragmented landscape can also help to slow down the movement of the typhoon, giving people more time to prepare and evacuate if necessary.

While mountain ranges are not a complete defense against typhoons, their presence can significantly reduce the severity of impacts on land. Understanding and utilizing the protective role of mountains in disaster risk reduction strategies is essential for enhancing resilience in typhoon-prone regions.
