The Link Between Climate Change and the Intensification of Extreme Weather Events | CBCGDF Climate Change Working Group

Climate change is increasingly recognized as a driver of extreme weather events, which are becoming more frequent and severe. The underlying mechanism lies in the enhanced greenhouse effect, where increased concentrations of greenhouse gases trap more heat in the Earth's atmosphere. This extra heat leads to higher average temperatures, which in turn disrupt weather patterns and intensify the hydrological cycle.

Warmer air can hold more moisture, leading to heavier rainfall and snowfall events. This is evident in the increased incidence of flooding and heavy precipitation across many regions. Similarly, higher temperatures contribute to the intensification of droughts, as more water evaporates from the soil and bodies of water, exacerbating water scarcity.

Moreover, climate change is linked to the strengthening of tropical cyclones and hurricanes, as warmer ocean surfaces provide more energy for these storms to form and intensify. The result is more powerful and destructive storms, with higher wind speeds and greater potential for storm surges.

Understanding the relationship between climate change and extreme weather is essential for developing effective adaptation and mitigation strategies. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preparing for the impacts of more frequent and severe weather events, societies can build resilience and safeguard against the adverse effects of climate change.
