What a spectacular sight! Fish "carnival" after heavy rain in Shenyang, climate change is a concern!

In late July 2024, Shenyang, Liaoning Province suffered a continuous rainstorm. After the rainstorm, numerous fish have jumped out of the water, the scene is very spectacular. Mr Wang, who shot the video, was very excited about this and speculated that it could be caused by flood discharge.

After the rainstorm, the phenomenon of fish scrambling to jump out of the water, there may be several reasons:

First, lack of oxygen. Rainstorms wash a lot of sediment, organic matter into the water column, resulting in turbid water, hindering photosynthesis in the water, thereby reducing the content of dissolved oxygen in the water. Fish feel uncomfortable due to lack of oxygen, forced to jump out of the water to breathe. Moreover, heavy rainfall will cause the water temperature to plummet, affecting the physiological functions of fish and exacerbating the lack of oxygen. In addition, the large amount of organic matter brought by heavy rainfall will consume a large amount of oxygen during decomposition, further deteriorating the water environment.

The second possible cause is pollution of water bodies. Heavy rainfall may flush pollutants such as fertilisers and pesticides from industrial wastewater and farmland into water bodies, forcing fish to jump out of the water.

In addition, rising water levels caused by heavy rains can compress the space for fish to move around, especially those in shallow waters, which can feel suffocated and jump. At the same time, the increased mobility of the water body may also cause fish to jump due to imbalance.

As for the "flood discharge" mentioned in the video, it may also be one of the reasons for the fish jumping.

Wild fish are often very sensitive to changes in the environment, especially fluctuations in the flow rate and water level of water bodies. The sudden rise in water level after the rainstorm caused a dramatic change in the habitat of the fish, and this sudden change may have frightened the fish, causing them to jump out of the water to seek temporary safety or escape the pressure.

The heavy rainfall in Shenyang that caused the fish to scramble out of the water may seem like a localised event, but it actually reflects a major global issue: climate change. In recent years, with heavy rainfalls or droughts across the globe, climate change is underway and deserves deep reflection from each and every one of us.
