Shenzhen Customs Found 10 Alien Giant African Harvester Ants (Messor cephalotes) in Toy Boxes, Which Could Be a Threat to Native Specieis | Reported by CBCGDF Volunteer SHEN Yihang

On July 26, when conducting supervision on transit goods, Shenzhen Customs officers found that the machine inspection image of a cargo package was suspicious, and then opened it for inspection. Upon investigation, it was found that the package contained 10 live ants hidden in a children's toy box and packed in a test tube.

According to professional institutions, these 10 live ants are Giant  African Harvester Ants (Messor cephalotes), which are alien species that have no natural distribution in my country.

The customs department attaches great importance to this discovery and reminds the public in particular: According to the "Biosafety Law of the People's Republic of China" and the "Law on Entry and Exit Animal and Plant Quarantine" and their implementing regulations, no individual or unit may introduce alien species without approval, especially the carrying and delivery of live animals and plants are strictly prohibited. Violations of these regulations will be investigated for relevant legal responsibilities in accordance with the law.
