Global Tiger Day: Conserving Tigers and Their Habitat

The tiger (Panthera tigris) is a member of the genus Panthera and the largest living cat species native to Asia. It has a powerful, muscular body with a large head and paws, a long tail and orange fur with black, mostly vertical stripes. However, due to the destruction of habitats, human over-hunting of tigers, a large reduction in prey and other reasons, the number of wild tigers has been greatly reduced, and has become the worlds endangered species.

Global Tiger Day is celebrated every year on July 29th as a way to highlights the urgent need to conserve tigers and their habitat. It is an important opportunity to celebrate conservation efforts, rally communities around the world and inspire further action to protect these majestic creatures, following the ambitious goals set at the 2010 St Petersburg Tiger Summit to double wild tiger populations.
