What is Needed Here is NOT to Pick up Garbage, but the Way to Deal with It | CBCGDF "Peoples vs. Plastics" Project
On July 12, 2024, a volunteer was busy picking up and cleaning up the garbage by the Jinsha River, when suddenly found that a sanitation truck was dumping garbage not far away. He was extremely shocked by this scene and uploaded the video to social media, which immediately arouse the anger of netizens around the country. Many people couldn’t help asking: What is the point of picking up garbage?
After
seeing the video, the local environmental protection department immediately
took action and quickly organized personnel to clean up the garbage dumped by
the sanitation truck overnight, and promised to jointly build garbage treatment
facilities with multiple departments to prevent similar incidents from
happening again.
According
to statistics, there are an average of 2,972 pieces of garbage scattered per
kilometer on the Qinghai-Tibet Highway from Xining, the capital of Qinghai
Province in the east to Lhasa, Tibet in the west, and volunteers pick up
100,000 pieces of garbage every year. Among them, plastic garbage occupies a
considerable amount, and the average number of plastic bottles alone is 1,553
per kilometer.
The
theme of Earth Day 2024 is "Planet vs. Plastics". Responding to the
theme, the "Reduce & Pick-up Plastics" working group of the China
Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) launched
the "People vs. Plastics" project, calling for public participation
and social co-governance, and hoping to rely on the power of the entire society
to resist plastic pollution.
This
project has received positive responses from volunteers from all over the
country.
So
far, a total of over 60 activities have been held with more than 2000 participants
and a total of nearly 4000kg of garbage picked up and dealt with.
We
hope that more people will join our "Planet vs. Plastics" team and take
practical actions to protect our nature and our environment.
