Fight Against Illegal Butterfly Hunting and Trade, Protect Insect Diversity | "Butterfly Explosion" in Yuanjiang County, Yunnan | View of a CBCGDF Volunteer

Recently, according to multiple media reports: Yuanjiang County, Yuxi City, Yunnan Province has ushered in a butterfly explosion, with 1 million butterflies emerging every day.The spectacular and beautiful explosion will last until August. In recent years, Yuanjiang County has actively taken measures to strengthen wild butterfly management measures and continuously improve the level of biodiversity protection by strengthening administrative licensing and administrative law enforcement inspections. These efforts have significantly increased the number of butterflies in the county, from millions a few years ago to hundreds of millions now.

Butterflies are also an important part of many food chains. Butterflies are "bioindicators" and their changes can measure the health of the surrounding ecosystem. Butterflies are important pollinators that spread pollen from one plant to another, helping fruits, vegetables and flowers produce new seeds. Butterflies are indicators of a healthy environment and play a role in increasing biodiversity. Butterflies provide natural pest control. Butterflies have ornamental value, as well as important economic and ecological value.

However, in recent decades, butterfly populations have declined significantly due to habitat loss (for example, urban expansion and deforestation), the extensive use of pesticides and herbicides, and climate change.

To protect the diversity of insects such as butterflies, we need to take active and effective measures. First, protect insect habitats. Second, we should reconsider whether the large-scale use of pesticides is appropriate and necessary. In particular, do not spray high concentrations of pesticides. If you encounter pests and diseases, you can use biological control if appropriate. Especially in urban areas, there is no need to spray pesticides frequently.
