ZHOU Jinfeng Made Suggestions on Exotic Pets and Indoor Zoos

Recently, Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Secretary General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), made suggestions on exotic pets and indoor zoos.

Zoos should be important places to promote harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. Their mission is not only to display and entertain, but also to include education and protection. However, some zoos choose to introduce exotic pets or build indoor zoos to attract more tourists and commercial interests, which has aroused Dr. Zhou's deep concern and reflection.

Zhou believes that introducing exotic pets into zoos may not only disrupt the local ecological balance, but also easily put animals in an unsuitable environment, and will also bring public health and animal welfare problems. The United Nations has put forward the slogan of "One Health", emphasizing the close connection between animal health, environmental health and human health. Zoo system needs to strengthen measures in health care, such as standardizing feeding behavior and eliminating unsafe close contact to ensure the health and well-being of animals.

Indoor zoos are a new form of animal display in recent years. They are usually set up in city centers or commercial places to provide audiences with a convenient viewing experience. They are attractive in terms of audience participation and commercial benefits, but the indoor environment cannot provide enough natural simulation and space to meet the survival needs of animals.

Dr. Zhou emphasized that zoos should strictly follow legal regulations, not purchase illegal species, and strive to improve existing display conditions and enhance the living environment of animals.We should pay more attention to the role and mission of zoos. Zoos should be based on science and ethics, maintain their educational and protective functions, and not just for viewing and commercial purposes. Protecting wild animals and promoting harmonious coexistence between man and nature is our purpose to ensure that every life can be respected and protected in its due environment.

The 2024 World Water Forum (10th WWF) under the theme of "Water for Shared Prosperity" officially opened on Indonesia's island of Bali on Monday.
