Occurrence Data of Apatura ilia in Beijing Released on Global Biodiversity Information Facility | CBCGDF GBIF Working Group

In Middle July 2024, the occurrence data of Apatura ilia was released to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). The data was recorded by citizen scientist in Haidian District, Beijing, and reported to the GBIF Working Group of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF). This release not only enhances our understanding of this beautiful butterfly species, but also provides valuable data support for biodiversity conservation. Thanks to CBCGDF expert Ms. WU Liye from the Lianyungang Municipal Education Bureau of Jiangsu Province for providing species identification.

Apatura ilia, the lesser purple emperor, is a species of butterfly native to Europe and most of Asia. It is named for its similarity to the purple emperor butterfly, its wingspan is about 59-64 mm, the wings are dark brown, and they flash a strong purple light in the sun.

The upper side of the wings is dark brown, with metallic blue-violet hues in the male, and it has a clear postdiscal band on the hind wing and several light spots on the fore wing.

According to Ms. WU Liye, it is easy to see the Apatura ilia in places with many willow trees in summer. Most of them stay on the treetops or suck sap from wounds on tree trunks, and occasionally stop on the ground. The Apatura ilia is widely distributed throughout China. Their wings can flash strong purple light in the sun, and the color changes depending on the observation angle. The wings of the Apatura ilia in the north are mostly darker than those in the south and the wings of the adults are also darker.

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international network and data infrastructure funded by governments worldwide, aiming to provide open access to data on all forms of life on Earth. The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation is a data publisher of GBIF. Since joining GBIF in 2018, the Chinese association has been committed to serving scientists, citizen scientists, and conservationists, contributing to biodiversity informatics with the collective efforts from science community and citizen scientists from China.
