CBCGDF OceanWetlands Group held a seminar on "Agenda 16 of the 29th Assembly of the International Seabed Authority"

The 29th Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) will be held from July 29 to August 2, 2024 in Kingston, Jamaica.

In the afternoon of July 16, 2024, the OceanWetlands Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) convened a seminar on the sixteenth item of the agenda of the 29th Assembly of the International Seabed Authority (ISA), "Proposals for a general policy for the protection and preservation of the marine environment", to discuss the proposal.

The proposal was a joint proposal by Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, France, Germany, Ireland, Palau, Switzerland and Vanuatu. The proposal noted that the international community as a whole was becoming increasingly concerned about the protection of the marine environment and was aware of the abundance of marine resources, as well as the fragility of their ecosystems, and that we know very little about the environment and biology of the deep sea.

Article 145 of UNCLOS expressly empowers the International Seabed Authority (ISA) to establish appropriate rules, regulations and procedures for the prevention, reduction and control of pollution and other hazards to the marine environment, for the protection and conservation of the natural resources of the Area and for the prevention of damage to the flora and fauna of the marine environment. The International Seabed Authority (ISA) has the responsibility to ensure that activities in the Area are carried out in accordance with sound conservation principles.

The development of a general policy for the protection and preservation of the marine environment will facilitate consideration of how the work of the International Seabed Authority (ISA) can contribute to the principles governing the Area.
