CBCGDF Deputy Secretary-General Joined the CMS ETF Mitigating Impacts on Bats Working Group

The Seventh Meeting of the Multi-Stakeholder the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Energy Task Force (ETF7) was held virtually and in person in Madrid, Spain from 24 to 25 April 2024.

Agenda items included the overview of key outcomes of CMS COP14; ETF activities; review of the ETF workplan implementation; review of strategic documents and discussion on implementation; updates from within the ETF; CMS COP14 decisions and next steps for the ETF; ETF Small Grant Fund launch; and, ETF priorities for 2024; and the establishment of five expert groups.

Recently, the International Department of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received the letter from CMS ETF. Ms. Linda Wong, CBCGDF Deputy Secretary-General successfully joined the Mitigating Impacts on Bats Working Group.

Bats play a crucial role in ecosystems. They are natural allies in insect control, consuming large numbers of pests such as mosquitoes, beetles, and moths every night. The silent disappearance of bats can have negative impacts on ecosystems and potentially lead to cascading effects, affecting the survival and ecological functions of other species. Ecocide, improper killing or handling of bats can have unforeseen ecological consequences and pose risks to public health.

China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation’s Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood Working Group (CBCGDF-BCON) launched the Initiative of building a Bat Conservation Action Network (BCAN) on June 20, 2023.

BCAN is a species conservation initiative aimed at mainstreaming biodiversity, raising awareness among the media and general public about bat conservation, serving scientific decision-making for China and its NBSAPs, and promoting the establishment of a National Species Action Plan for bat conservation in China.
