How Does Global Warming Specifically Lead to an Increase in Extreme Weather Events such as Heat Waves, Heavy Rainfall and Droughts? | Report by CBCGDF-SSBSP (4)
At present, human society is suffering from various extreme weather such as rainstorms and floods, high temperature heat waves, strong winds and dust. In such a severe situation, what can ordinary people do? What do they need to know? How to further enhance the practice and understanding of environmental protection and green development among the general public?
Professor YUE Xiaoguang, Executive Secretary General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation South-South Biodiversity Science Project(CBCGDF-SSBSP) and European University of Cyprus, sorted out some relevant questions and interviewed several members of the International Engineering and Technology Association (IETI), hoping that they can give some easy-to-understand answers to this. The following is the relevant interview content:
Q: How does global warming specifically lead to an increase in extreme weather events such as heat waves, heavy rainfall and droughts?
Ph.D. in Hydrology and Water Resources, China University of Geosciences (Wuhan), and Ph.D. Researcher Muhammad Zaheer Abbasi, Lanzhou University:
Basically, extreme weather changes can be caused by many reasons, such as: 1) Transboundary pollution can cause sudden changes in extreme floods and droughts; 2) Industrial pollution does not follow purification standards and is emitted into the atmosphere; 3) Urbanization also causes this problem; 4) Landfill gas and other pollution, such as coal processing, causes carbon monoxide to enter the atmosphere and heat waves; 5) Deforestation. My main suggestions are: 1) Plant more and more trees; 2) Build more and more reservoirs; 3) Purify harmful gases before emitting them into the atmosphere; 4) Control urbanization.
Professor Julien S. Baker, Honorary Professor of the University of Sydney, Australia, and Professor of Hong Kong Baptist University, also participated in this interview, and his main point is to stop pollution.
