A best practice of BCON: Over 90 illegal fishing nets destroyed, & 500 kg fish back to the Songhua River! | CBCGDF CCAfa

On July 24, 2024, during the critical period of the fishing ban, volunteers from CBCGDF Community Conservation Area for Wetlands at Suihua, Heilongjiang, volunteers from the Anti-Electric Fishing Alliance, and volunteers from other social organisations assisted the Fisheries Law Enforcement Brigade of the Zhaodong Municipal Bureau of Agriculture in a joint fisheries protection operation to carry out a major overhaul of illegal fishing and lawlessness on the Songhua River and its tributaries in the Zhaodong District.

Departing at 6 a.m., the volunteers and law enforcement officers, a total of 13 people and three vehicles, travelled more than 130 kilometres in total to go deep into the Songhua River watershed to clean up all kinds of illegal nets with strong concealment and destructive power. From Suihua to Zhaodong, the volunteers travelled more than 300 kilometres round trip, and it was close to midnight when they returned in the evening.

In total, more than 90 pieces of illegal nets were cleaned and destroyed, and about 1,000 catties (fish) were released.

Some villagers said that due to the large number of people releasing fish in the vicinity over the past two days, many villagers took the risk of laying nets to catch the released fish. In response, CBCGDF volunteers carried out publicity work with them.

Despite the challenges faced by fisheries law enforcement, such as the difficulty of enforcement, outdated equipment, tight staff and shortage of funds, fisheries law enforcement officers still worked tirelessly to patrol the river basin. This wetlands action, perfectly embodying CBCGDF's advocate——Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON), not only contributed to the protection of fishery resources and the sustainable development of the ecological environment of the waters, protecting lucid waters, but also highlighted that the concept of ecological protection is gradually becoming the consensus and action of all sectors of society.

Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON) is a global biodiversity solution initiated by CBCGDF's Jinfeng Zhou which's designed to mitigate the rapid loss of biodiversity through people-centered approaches. As an innovative initiative for biodiversity conservation in the era of ecological civilization, "Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood" is a people-engaged solution, encouraging active contributions from the public in reducing biodiversity footprints in daily life, engaging in nature conservation, and actively contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As of Jan 2024, over 210 community conservation areas have been established to carry out "Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood" (BCON). BCON has been recognized as one of the global solutions for nature at the 2023 Paris Peace Forum.
