CBCGDF Calls for Caring for Wildlife and not Letting More Thuja sutchuenensis Get Hurt by “Love”

Recently, a volunteer from China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) reported to the CBCGDF Legal Working Committee that due to the scarcity of Thuja sutchuenensis, the current situation of selling thuja ornaments and crafts on online platforms is prevalent, which seriously threatens the survival of wild Thuja sutchuenensis.

Thuja sutchuenensis is an evergreen shrub or tree plant of the genus Thuja in the Cupressaceae family. It is named "崖柏" because it grows on cliffs. It is a relic plant of the Cretaceous period of the dinosaur era. It is called a "living fossil" and is also given a symbol of longevity. Thuja sutchuenensis is a first-class protected plant in the National Key Protected Wild Plant List and is listed as an endangered species in the Red List of Endangered Species of the IUCN.

According to the online investigation of merchants by the staff of the CBCGDF Legal Working Committee, the so-called Thuja sutchuenensis products sold on the platform, such as root carvings, bracelets, pillows, ornaments and other crafts, may not be the national first-level protected plant Thuja sutchuenensis. The most circulated areThuja sutchuenensis and other cypress species growing in the Taihang Mountains.

Some merchants use the scarce characteristics of Thuja sutchuenensis as a "living fossil" and "endangered species" to promote the products they sell and mislead consumers, which is a violation of the Advertising Law Article 4 which clearly states that advertisements shall not contain false or misleading content, and shall not deceive or mislead consumers.
