CBCGDF Legal Working Committee Promotes to Carry Out Special Rectification of Artificial Breeding of Terrestrial Wild Animals Such as Tigers

Image
In April 2024, the Legal Working Committee of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) intervened in the investigation of the death of Siberian tigers in Fuyang Wildlife Park in Anhui Province. After investigation, it was found that Fuyang Wildlife Park did not obtain the qualification for artificial breeding of wild Siberian tigers, and the living environment of Siberian tigers in the park was extremely poor. In addition, the venues and equipment facilities for artificial breeding of Siberian tigers in the park were non-compliant and non-standard, which has caused more than a dozen wild Siberian tigers to die of abnormal reasons. The Legal Working Committee of CBCGDF has called for relevant departments to conduct in-depth investigations and study solutions.   On May 23,2024, the National Forestry and Grassland Administration issued "Notice of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration on Carrying out Special Rectification Actions on Ar

Workshop on National Action Plans on the Illegal Killing, Taking and Trade of Migratory Birds   will Take Place from 2 September to 4 September 2024, in Podgorica, Montenegro.   The meeting aims to make progress on the Rome Strategic Plan 2020-2030: Eradicating Illegal Killing, Taking and Trade in Wild Birds in Europe and the Mediterranean region, process-oriented objective of National IKB Action Plans. The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has long been dedicated to the conservation of migratory birds. Its efforts encompass widespread public engagement through initiatives like Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON). For years, the Foundation has advocated at the platforms of China's National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, urging the government to ratify the United Nations Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) to promote protection measures for migratory wildlife, including

Differences between ESG Report and Traditional Report | ZHOU Talks about the Fourth Civilization (Lecture 295)

Image
There is a misunderstanding in current discussions about the sustainable development and ESG (environmental, social and governance) reports. Credit to CBCGDF These reports are neither financial reports, audits, nor advocacy reports, but rather technical reports, similar to post-environmental impact assessments (post-EIAs). The ESG report is a scientific assessment of corporate behaviour, particularly its impact on the environment, biodiversity and climate.   The "E" in ESG stands for Environmental Assessment, which covers biodiversity and climate change issues. Therefore, such assessments should be led by experts in biodiversity and climate science, not legal or financial experts.   Proper understanding and implementation of ESG reporting requires in-depth scientific research and professional assessments to drive sustainable business development.   Editor: LYJ Check: Richard Contact: v10@cbcgdf.org; +8617319454776 Contribution Do you know? How Sustainability and ESG Report Can Serve the Eco-Civilization| ZHOU Talks about the Fourth Civilization (Lecture 296)

Effective sustainable and ESG (environmental, social and governance) reporting should be guided by the following principles: assessment by a third party; conducted by a technical body or expert with relevant expertise, especially in the fields of biodiversity and climate science; and based on scientific research and data analysis to ensure its accuracy and reliability. Credit to CBCGDF There are limitations to the current practice of using the Green Business Directory or the Green Project Directory to label green projects, for example, photovoltaic projects built on bird migration paths may damage the environment. Therefore, scientific and systematic research and comprehensive assessment are needed, rather than simply judging the greenness of a project based on a catalogue.   Editor: LYJ Check: YJ Contact: v10@cbcgdf.org; +8617319454776 Contribution Do you know? Understanding China's "Three Haves" Wildlife Protection: An Unique Concept of Approach to Biodiversity Conservation Protecting 1924 Species

Image
In the context of biodiversity conservation in China, a crucial concept is the "Three Haves", or Sanyou (三有)in Chinese. "Three Haves" animals refer to those listed in the National Forestry and Grassland Administration's Directory of Terrestrial Wild Animals with Important Ecological, Scientific, and Social Value. The latest version of this directory was released on June 26, 2023. The newly adjusted "Three Haves" list includes a total of 1924 species of terrestrial wild animals. This includes 91 species of mammals, 1028 species of birds, 450 species of reptiles, 253 species of amphibians, 96 species of insects, 2 species of arachnids, and 4 species of oligochaetes. Compared to the original directory published in 2000, the new list has substantially expanded the scope of wildlife protection by adding more than 700 new species while retaining most of the original species. Additionally, the new list removes 12 mammal species, 130 bird species, 28 reptile s

CBCGDF Invited to Participate in the Webinar "The Earth Charter at 24:Fostering Ecological, Ethical and Systems Literacy"

Image
Recently, the International Department of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received an invitation letter from the Earth Charter International (ECI). The ECI will hold a webinar themed "The Earth Charter at 24:Fostering Ecological, Ethical and Systems Literacy" at 7 am on June 29, 2024 (Beijing time). Over the past 24 years, the Earth Charter has stood as a major ethical reference, a lighthouse of hope and wisdom, and a valuable guide through evolving global challenges. Its valuable ecological, ethical, and systemic vision offers an outstanding instrument for helping to expand our consciousness with regards to our deep interdependence with the large living world. There is still much that can be done to amplify its use as an instrument of education, especially given the need of a new kind of education. Making ecological, ethical, and systemic literacy central to education is pivotal and can be a major driver addressing today ’ s pres

How to Develop an International Declaration on Climate Change | CBCGDF Climate Change Working Group

Image
A n international declaration on climate change can serve as a powerful tool to drive global action and protect our planet for future generations.   Creating an international declaration on climate change is a complex task that requires a collaborative approach and a clear vision. The first step is to establish a drafting committee comprising representatives from various nations, including those most affected by climate change and those with significant contributions to global emissions. The committee should begin by reviewing existing climate agreements and declarations to build upon past efforts and avoid duplication. It's crucial to set ambitious yet achievable goals, such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, transitioning to renewable energy, and enhancing climate resilience. Engagement with scientific experts is essential to ensure that the declaration is based on the latest climate research. Public consultations can also provide valuable insights from a diverse range of stak

A 17-year-old student drowned unfortunately after being entangled in a fishing net (Jinan, Shandong): Who is to blame?! | ZHOU Jinfeng Talks about the Fourth Civilisation (294)

Image
On 13 June 2024, a 17-year-old teenager from Shandong Province drowned near Dragon Lake Wetland Park in Magpie Mountain, Jinan. Rescuers surmised that the teenager accidentally fell into the water while playing with a paddle board in the lake and became entangled in an underwater fishing net, which ultimately led to the tragedy. The accident is not only heartbreaking, but also raises serious concerns about the potential threat of "ghost fishing gear". The Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) shares his views on this issue. (The following is based on Dr Zhou's audio recording and has not been verified by him, it is for reference only.) Question 1: Does abandoned fishing gear in rivers and wetlands fall into the category of "ghost fishing gear"? The drowning of the teenager is saddening. In addition to his own reasons, are other parties responsible? Dr Zhou : "Ghost fishing gear" in the ocean re
