Ocean Wind Power Project Could Enable Chinese White Dolphin Conservation with CBCGDF Neighborhood Biodiversity Technology | Media Interview with Ma Yong

Ma Yong, Deputy Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), was interviewed by journalists on the construction of ocean wind power demonstration projects and the protection of the Chinese White Dolphin. Here's the basic viewpoint he shared:

Recently, we have conducted several field studies on the protection of the Chinese White Dolphin in Beibu Gulf, Guangxi.

At present, many groups of tourists go to watch the Chinese White Dolphins. As a result, there are many speedboats or yachts taking tourists to the sea. The noise caused by the boats or yachts, including the noise from the propellers, causing injuries or impacts on the Chinese White Dolphins. In addition, there is also the problem of ghost fishing gear, resulting in fatal injuries to Chinese White Dolphins such as asphyxiation or accidental ingestion.

The second major problem is the port project and some other marine projects built on the basis of the port. These projects require the construction of dykes, which isolate the ecological corridors of the Chinese white dolphins, and such man-made intervention has a great impact on the survival and reproduction of the Chinese white dolphins.

The CBCGDF is promoting the Neighborhood Biodiversity Technology to help promote offshore wind projects as demonstration projects.

From a general point of view, it is necessary to strengthen the environmental impact assessment and research of offshore construction. In particular, ongoing tracking and evaluation is very meaningful.

In addition to offshore projects, there is also global climate change that has a profound impact on the Chinese White Dolphins.

The tourism industry based on Chinese White Dolphins entertainment is another threat.

And the impact of mariculture on Chinese White Dolphins should not be ignored.

Therefore, one of the issues that should be considered is how to strike a balance between local economic development and the protection of Chinese white dolphins. In the future, we need to apply innovative technologies to promote protection, and use standardized norms or codes of conduct to do a good job of supervision and constraints, to further enhance the awareness of Chinese white dolphins protection.
