Focus on the Animal Diversity in Tongbai Mountain Area and Protect the Animals in the Source Area of Huaihe River

Tongbai Mountain is located in the border area between Henan Province and Hubei Province in China. Most of the northern side of its main ridge is in Henan Province. It is the transition zone from Qinling Mountains to Dabie Mountains. It belongs to the western section of Huaiyang Mountains and runs northwest-southeast. It is the watershed between Huaihe River Basin and Yangtze River Basin. Tongbai Mountain area is located in the transition zone between warm temperate zone and northern subtropical zone. The climate in this area is warm and humid, the vegetation is lush, and the animal and plant resources are rich. It is an important treasure house of animal and plant resources in central China. Here, we analyze the literature and combine it with biodiversity-assisted surveys to sort out the characteristics and changes of animal diversity in Tongbai Mountain area, so as to enhance people's awareness of biodiversity and protection in Tongbai Mountain area.

According to the 2021 edition of the "National Key Protected Wildlife List", it has been corrected and the Chestnut-throated Hummingbird, which was surveyed by the project team, has been added. Based on this, the list of national key protected wildlife in the Tongbai Mountain area at the source of the Huaihe River is compiled as follows:

National first-class protected animals: Syrmaticus reevesii

National second-class Protected Animals: Pandion haliaetus,Circus melanoleucosAccipiter nisusButeo buteoFalco tinnunculusF.peregrinusCentropus bengalensisTyto longimembris)、Glaucidium cuculoidesG.canorusMerops viridisMerops philippinus

The Tongbai Mountain area at the source of the Huaihe River is an extremely sensitive ecological area in the Huaihe River Basin. It is also a priority biodiversity protection area and an important water conservation area in my country. The wildlife population in this area is mainly threatened by hunting caused by economic interests and agricultural production. Forests are the main habitats for terrestrial wildlife in the Tongbai Mountains. The reduction in forest area and the reduction in forest ecosystem diversity are the main reasons for the loss and degradation of wildlife habitats. Therefore, wildlife protection in the Tongbai Mountain area should focus on maintaining and improving habitats and ecological environments, systematically protecting and restoring the main ecosystems in the area, and strengthening legal supervision and publicity and education.
