Commentary | Data on Species in Laoshan, Qingdao May Be Incomplete; Historical Records Can Help Clarify the “Inventory” of Biodiversity

On January 2, 2025, after the A total of 3,081 Species (including Subspecies) Discovered in Biodiversity Survey of Laoshan Biodiversity Conservation Priority Area in Qingdao was published, it attracted the attention of many experts and scholars in related fields, who left comments or sent messages on this issue. Taking this as an opportunity, experts conducted an in-depth discussion on this matter. The comments might provide a valuable reference for understanding the biodiversity inventory.

The following is one experts comment:

In the autumn of 1956, the Sino-German Agricultural and Biological Science Expedition Team collected bats under rocks by the roadside when they were briefly conducting an investigation in Laoshan Mountain. The number of mammal species mentioned in this article might be insufficient due to inadequate investigation.

Incidentally, during that expedition, a variety of bats were collected at the Mansion of Confucius and Temple of Confucius in Qufu. The expedition report was written by Prof. Dr. Klaus Zimmerman and published in the journal of the Berlin Museum. According to the bilateral agreement, all the several thousand bird and mammal specimens collected were preserved in that museum.

In view of this, we suggest that when conducting biodiversity surveys in various regions, information isolation should be avoided. Historical documents should be sorted out more, and historical data (including data that have been published in domestic and foreign literature) should also be collected and organized as part of the process.
