Merops Philippinu First Appeared in the Source of the Huaihe River! Important Discovery of Animal Diversity in Tongbai Mountain Area
The Huaihe River Source Mountain and Water Forest Protection Project started in mid-November 2023. Over the past year or so, the project team has cooperated with the Chenzhuang State Forest Farm in Tongbai County to carry out a 12-month patrol. Based on the patrol records and other relevant materials submitted by the patrol staff, combined with relevant literature, and the animal and plant observations that have been carried out by CBCGDF volunteers and bird watchers, we have sorted out the records and discoveries of the biodiversity of the Huaihe River Source over the past year, in order to enhance the understanding and cognition of the biodiversity of the Tongbai Mountain area.
The vertebrates recorded by the Huaihe Source Project patrol team during their patrols include Sus scrofa, Merops philippinus, Merops viridis and other animal species. Among them, Merops philippinus and Merops viridis are both national second-level key protected wild animals, and both birds are summer migratory birds in Tongbai Mountain.
Merops philippinus is a bird of the genus Merops in the family Mylidae. It has the characteristic of colorful feathers of tropical birds and is known as one of the most beautiful bird species in China. It is a national Class II key protected wild animal and is also on the "National List of Terrestrial Wildlife with Important Ecological, Scientific and Social Values".
According to media reports, in May 2022, Merops philippinus appeared in the Danjiang Wetland Reserve in Nanyang City, Henan Province, setting a new record for birds in Henan. According to the staff of Taibaiding Nature Reserve, the first photo of Merops philippinus was taken during patrol in early May 2024. The discovery of Merops philippinus in the project area shows that the overall ecological environment of the Huaihe River source area is suitable for this species to inhabit, and it also reflects to a certain extent that global warming is causing migratory birds to move their habitats northward.
In addition, according to patrol officers, the blue-throated bee-eater is more common in Taibaiding Nature Reserve than Merops philippinus. Birdwatchers have also photographed Merops viridis in Tongbai Mountain. For more detailed information about the distribution of blue-throated bee-eaters in Tongbai County, please refer to the article.
