Banna Overstory is part of Niamh Cunningham's Forest Breath Series, where the artist offers a glimpse into the lush canopy of the Xishuangbanna rainforest. The overhead view is alive with the diversity of caryota palms and other tropical species, interspersed with epiphytes and the towering buttress tree. The vibrant colors and layered composition in acrylic bring to life the intricate and dynamic structure of the forest, illustrating both the complexity and beauty of this vital ecosystem.’ Banna Overstory’ is part of the Forest Breath Series.

Niamh Cunningham is a visual artist working in Beijing for more than a decade. Her work is focused on ecological insights and linked to themes of collective transformation. She works mostly with paints, and employs mixed media and photographic processes in developing new techniques such as her “Sucrose Series”. She explores the space between the known and the unknown, of recognition and perception in her Portraits .  In November 2020 she began work on a pilot project Microbe Art with research scientists the Institute of Process Engineering (IPE)  .


Light and transparency are often signatures in her work.

The world’s ocean ecosystems are facing mounting threats—climate change, marine pollution, overfishing, and habitat destruction due to human activities, to name a few.
