Changes in Animal Diversity in the CBCGDF CCAfa in Tongbai Mountain and Its Protection

Since the research of Zhao Haipeng, we can obtain on animal diversity in  Community Conservation Area in Tongbai Mountain of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF), the CBCGDF project team combined the situation investigated by the project and sorted out the current 140 bird species (belonging to 15 orders and 43 families), 7 mammal species (belonging to 4 orders and 7 families), 6 amphibians (belonging to 1 order and 4 families), and 9 reptile species (belonging to 1 order and 4 families) in Tongbai Mountain Area according to the "National List of Key Protected Wildlife" (2021 edition). Among them, there is 1 first-class national protected animal (1 bird) and 12 second-class national protected animals (all birds). Because the protection level of birds and mammals in Zhao Haipeng et al. (2024) was incorrectly marked, we made corrections according to the 2021 edition of the "National List of Key Protected Wildlife" and added the chestnut-throated hummingbirds surveyed by the project team. Based on this, the list of national key protected wild animals in Tongbai Mountain area at the source of Huaihe River is compiled as follows:

National first-class key protected animals:Syrmaticus reevesii

National second-class key protected animals:Pandion haliaetus;Circus melanoleucos;Accipiter nisus;Buteo buteo;Falco tinnunculus;F.peregrinus;Centropus bengalensis;Tyto longimembris;Glaucidium cuculoides;G. canorus;Merops viridis;and Merops philippinus.

Through comparative analysis of the results of animal resource investigations conducted in the 1980s and 2018, in terms of the number of bird and mammal species alone, the number of bird species in Tongbai Mountain decreased from 162 to 140, and the number of mammal species decreased from 27 to 7. Regardless of the differences in survey methods, degrees, and survey areas between the two periods, the animal diversity in Tongbai Mountain has decreased significantly.

The Tongbai Mountain at the source of the Huaihe River belongs to an extremely sensitive ecological area in the Huaihe River Basin, and is also a priority biodiversity protection area and an important water conservation area in my country. Wildlife populations in this area are mainly threatened by hunting caused by economic interests and agricultural production. Forests are the main habitats for terrestrial wildlife in Tongbai Mountain. The reduction in forest area and the reduction in diversity of forest ecosystems are the main reasons for the loss and degradation of wildlife habitats. Therefore, wildlife protection in Tongbai Mountain should focus on maintaining and improving habitats and ecological environments, systematically protecting and restoring the main ecosystems in the area, and strengthening legal supervision and publicity and education.
