A total of 3,081 Species (including Subspecies) Discovered in Biodiversity Survey of Laoshan Biodiversity Conservation Priority Area in Qingdao

In May 2022, the Qingdao Municipal Ecological Environment Bureau of Shandong Province launched the “Biodiversity Survey Project of Laoshan Biodiversity Conservation Priority Area. This project is one of the three pilot projects of biodiversity surveys in biodiversity conservation priority areas in Shandong Province. It is led by Shandong University and carried out jointly by 5 universities and research institutes.

The results of the project have recently been officially published and distributed by Shandong Science and Technology Press. This is the first officially published and distributed biodiversity survey and assessment result of biodiversity conservation priority areas in Shandong Province.

The Laoshan Biodiversity Conservation Priority Area includes Laoshan Mountain, Hualou Mountain, Sanbiao Mountain and their surrounding foothills. It is the region with the greatest diversity of plant species at the same latitude in China. It is characterised by distinct transitional features of biota, diverse ecosystems, rich species diversity and complex genetic components, making it extremely valuable for natural ecological protection and scientific research.

This survey, combined with historical data, identified a total of 3,081 species (including subspecies) of various types in Laoshan, including: terrestrial higher plants with 7 classes, 52 orders, 167 families, 759 genera and 1,671 species; terrestrial vertebrates with 28 orders, 72 families and 257 species; insects with 18 orders, 135 families, 362 genera and 431 species; aquatic organisms with 476 species; large fungi with 3 classes, 15 orders, 52 families, 104 genera and 246 species.
