A Brief Introduction to the CBCGDF Sand Martin Community Conservation Area in Henan Province (CCAfa004)
Sand martin Community Conservation Area in Henan Province(CCAfa004) is the fourth community conservation area established by the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF).
CCAfa004 is located in Zhengzhou City, Henan Province, and was officially established in May 2016. The purpose of the establishment of the CCAfa004 is to build a safe habitat for sand martins(Riparia riparia), hoping that sand martins have a fixed habitat to reduce accidental injuries. In addition, the protection of sand martins’ habitats in Zhengzhou also provides a model for reference for the protection model of non-national key protected wild animals.
Sand martin, also known as bank swallow or collared sand martin, is a bird of the Hirundae family. Sand martins like to live by the river with sandy cliffs. Because suitable habitats are difficult to find, they choose sandy cliffs not far from the water source as a second choice. It is named because it likes to build nests on sandy cliffs, and is also called "cliff architect".
Sand martin is distributed all over the world. It migrates south in winter and travels back and forth between northern my country and Southeast Asia every year. It is listed in the "National List of Terrestrial Wildlife with Important Economic and Scientific Research Value" and the "Red List of Endangered Species of the World Conservation Union" (IUCN) 2016 ver 3.1-Least Concern (LC).
On June 14, 2018, a sand field operation in Xuchang City, Henan Province not only destroyed the surrounding ecological environment on a large scale, but also seriously affected the cliff martin living in the nearby area. After continuous appeals from volunteers of the CBCGDF CCAfa, the incident has received high attention from many units such as the Xuchang Environmental Protection Bureau, Forestry Bureau, and Jian'an District. In the end, the sand mining site around the sand martin habitat was closed, and the road for transporting sand was cut off. The breeding of sand martins and the protection of its habitat have begun to show results.
