Green Actions and Thinking of CBCGDF Youth at COP29

In November 2024, the 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP29) was held in Baku, Azerbaijan. The Climate Change Working Group of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF) formed a delegation mainly composed of young volunteers and climate solution experts, showing the style of Chinese youth and their innovation and practice in climate change response solutions on the international stage. During the conference, CBCGDF and the Azerbaijan Youth Teachers Association (AYTA) jointly held a green campus theme education exchange event, which not only received the support of the Azerbaijani government, but also promoted exchanges and cooperation between the youth of China and Azerbaijan in addressing climate change and sustainable development. The following are the experiences and insights shared by delegation member Sun Xuanting:

I have participated in the International Student Environment and Sustainable Development Conference held by UNEP and Tongji University before, but this time in Azerbaijan is my first time to attend the United Nations General Assembly. The United Nations General Assembly is more inclusive and diverse than I thought. In addition to environmentalists, there are also governments, media, meditation organizations, left-wing environmentalists, and so on. Everyone started from various angles, making this conference not only a policy-making meeting for top politicians, but also a sharing platform for non-governmental organizations. It is really touching to see so many people in the world choose to work hard for their ideals and a better future.

At the sharing event of the Green School, Mr. Lin Peng mainly shared China's successful cases and experiences in sustainable animal husbandry, as well as strategies to encourage children and young people to participate in environmental protection actions through sustainable development education. I mainly participated in the working group on how to educate students to enhance their awareness of garbage classification and environmental protection. Through a week of exchanges and seminars, we have established deep friendships with many student representatives and teacher representatives. In casual conversations with teachers, we learned that there are many dialects in Azerbaijan, as well as beautiful canyons and scenery, and we have a deeper understanding of Baku, an ancient and modern city.

When communicating with local teachers and normal school students, I discovered the differences in the education and training systems of China and Azerbaijan, and realized the pain brought to citizens by being a citizen of a war-torn country, and also realized how tenacious and optimistic the people of this land are. One of the representatives was a principal from Sheki, who devoted himself to running the school and made selfless contributions. He enthusiastically invited our representative teachers to share their experiences in the local area.

From the moment I got on the flight back to China, the Caspian Sea at night, the brightly lit streets, and the Flame Towers have been lingering in my mind.
