Two Wild Populations, Revitalizing a Regional Economic Industry in Ten Years | CBCGDF CCAfa

Dendrobium officinale is a perennial orchid plant. It is known as the "life-saving magic grass" because of its high nutritional and medicinal value. Originally produced in Yuyao City, Zhejiang Province, Dendrobium officinale has a history of fame and use of more than 500 years.

Unfortunately, due to the high demand for this precious herb, and the fact that it is demanding on the living environment and difficult to reproduce naturally, by around 2000, Yuyao City, the origin of Dendrobium officinale, basically no trace of wild Dendrobium officinale could be found. Similar to Dendrobium officinale, more than half of other orchids are endangered in my country, and Dendrobium officinale is listed as a national second-class protected wild plant. In May 2011, Yuyao local entrepreneur Yao Guoxiang accidentally discovered a clump of wild Dendrobium officinale on the cliffs of Siming Mountain, and later discovered another clump. There are only two small populations. This discovery is a pleasant surprise.

In order to protect this fragile and rare species, a nature reserve was established in Yuyao City, the original place of discovery, with the approval of the Zhejiang Provincial Forestry Department, for these two small populations. In June 2019, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) jointly established the CBCGDF Wild Dendrobium Officinale Protection Area Yuyao with Zhejiang Jianjiuhe Group on the basis of the nature reserve to protect the habitat within 70 square kilometers around the original wild small population.

At present, in addition to the intact protection of the original population, its artificial breeding base has reached 1,250 acres, and a series of products using Dendrobium officinale as raw materials have become a major local industry. In 2022, Yuyao Dendrobium officinale also obtained the Chinese Geographical Indication Certification Trademark.
