Occurrence Data of Cipangopaludina chinensis in Beijing Haidian Park Released on Global Biodiversity Information Facility | CBCGDF GBIF Working Group

In Late August 2024, the occurrence data of Cipangopaludina chinensis recorded in Haidian Park, Beijing was released to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). The data was recorded by citizen scientist and reported to the GBIF Working Group of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF). Thanks to the water ecological restoration research group of East China Normal University for providing suggestions and references.

The Cipangopaludina chinensis is a large freshwater snail with gills and an operculum, an aquatic gastropod mollusk in the family Viviparidae. It is widely distributed in lakes, ponds, rivers and other waters in Asia, and is particularly common in the waters of China.

The Cipangopaludina chinensis plays an important role in the ecosystem. They are not only an important component of the water body, but also serve as intermediate hosts for some parasites that rely on freshwater snails to complete part of their life cycle.

In addition, The Cipangopaludina chinensis also have certain economic and cultural values. In some areas, they are caught and used as ingredients, especially in traditional local dishes.

Although the species is a widespread native species, it is also threatened to some extent by illegal fishing. Meanwhile, the Cipangopaludina chinensis are also facing environmental pressures, such as water pollution and habitat destruction, which may threaten their survival. It is particularly important to protect the habitats of them and maintain ecological balance.

The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international network and data infrastructure funded by governments worldwide, aiming to provide open access to data on all forms of life on Earth. The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation is a data publisher of GBIF. Since joining GBIF in 2018, the Chinese association has been committed to serving scientists, citizen scientists, and conservationists, contributing to biodiversity informatics with the collective efforts from science community and citizen scientists from China.
