The Role of Artisanal Fisheries in Sustainable Ocean Stewardship | CBCGDF Climate Change Working Group

Artisanal fisheries, small-scale fishing operations often conducted by local communities, play a crucial role in the livelihoods and cultural identity of many coastal regions. These fisheries are deeply intertwined with the social and ecological fabric of coastal communities, and their practices can have significant implications for ocean health and sustainability.

While industrial fisheries often dominate discussions about overfishing and marine resource management, artisanal fisheries can be managed in ways that are more in tune with ecological limits and local needs. Practices such as selective fishing methods, seasonal closures, and community-based co-management can help ensure the long-term viability of fish stocks and the preservation of marine biodiversity.

The role of artisanal fisheries in sustainable ocean stewardship extends beyond resource extraction. They can serve as stewards of the marine environment, with local knowledge and traditional practices that contribute to ecosystem conservation. Artisanal fishers often have a vested interest in the health of their fishing grounds and can be powerful advocates for sustainable fishing practices and marine protected areas.

To support artisanal fisheries in their role as ocean stewards, it is important to recognize and value their contributions to food security, cultural heritage, and biodiversity conservation. Policies that promote sustainable fishing practices, fair trade, and the inclusion of artisanal fishers in decision-making processes can help ensure that these fisheries continue to thrive while contributing to the health of our oceans.

By fostering a partnership between artisanal fisheries and broader conservation efforts, we can create a future where small-scale fishing communities are recognized as integral to the sustainable management of marine resources and the preservation of ocean ecosystems.
