China and Vietnam Join Forces to Protect Rare Gibbons

A group of eastern black-crested gibbons (the Cao Vit gibbon) thrive in the pristine forests along the China-Vietnam border. This species was once widespread throughout southern China and northern Vietnam. It was internationally recognised as extinct in the 1950s. However, at the beginning of this century, the eastern black-crested gibbon was rediscovered along the China-Vietnam border. It had been missing for almost half a century. The Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China and Vietnam began cross-border cooperation to protect these gibbons.

China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has long been committed to the conservation of apes in ethnic minority areas, especially deep into the southwestern border areas of Yunnan and Guizhou, and assisted in the conservation of the survival of apes in China through the establishment of the Community Conservation Area (CCAfa). In January 2020, CBCGDF officially established the Community Conservation Area for eastern black-crested gibbons (the Cao Vit gibbon) in the Wuliangshan area of Yunnan Province.
