CBCGDF Legal Working Committee: Picking Wild Plants May Be Criminalized!

Recently, the news that "24 people in Inner Mongolia investigated for picking the wild onion (Allium mongolicum)" has become a hot topic. Some people think that this investigation is making a mountain out of a molehill, while others think that it is to protect the environment, and some question the right of ordinary people to pick "wild vegetables". There is a great deal of controversy among the public about this incident.

So, is picking wild onions (Allium mongolicum) and wild mushrooms really a small matter? What kind of impact will it have on the environment and society? Here, we mainly consider the situation of wild onions, wild mushrooms and other species themselves and their impact on the local ecological environment. Wild onion, also known as Mongolian chives, was listed in the "List of Key Protected Wild Plants in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region" in 2009. It is a protected plant in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region that cannot be picked at will. The wild onion (Allium mongolicum)  has a large root growth range: up to 70-80 cm in depth and 50-60 cm in width. It has the ecological protection function of preventing wind and sand and preventing soil erosion. At the same time, because of its cold and drought resistance and wide adaptability,  Allium mongolicum has become an important vegetation for local ecological protection. It is mainly planted by division, and can also be propagated by seeds. Therefore, whether picking them will have an impact on the growth and reproduction of wild onion. Long-term and large-scale picking may lead to desertification of the picking area.

Judging from the legal protection of wild onion and wild mushrooms and their impact on the ecological environment, the act of picking them not only endangers the survival of vegetation and destroys the local ecology, but also violates the law. Therefore, the investigation and punishment by local law enforcement officers is not "making a fuss over nothing".

The hot news discussion caused by this incident has raised the protection of wild plants to a high point. In this regard, the Legal Working Committee of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) calls on everyone to pay attention to wild plants, protect wild plants, and not collect wild plants at will. If there are any illegal collection, felling, trading of wild plants, etc., report them to the administrative law enforcement department in a timely manner. I hope everyone will work together to protect wild plants and protect our green mountains and rivers.
