9 Months Have Passed, Wild Black Bears Captured in Mishan, Heilongjiang Concern CBCGDF Volunteers
It has been more than nine months since the capture of black bears in Mishan, Heilongjiang Province in December 2023. According to the video released by the official media at the time, the captured black bear was found and captured while walking in the snow outside the village. In the video, someone drove a car to follow the black bear from a distance, and then the black bear fell to the ground after being anesthetized. Throughout the incident, there were no reports of people being attacked or injured by black bears, no publicity and education content on protecting wild animals, no explanation of the whereabouts of the captured black bears, and no action by the local wildlife protection department to release the captured black bears according to law and needs.
We
understand that the local emergency response mechanism was activated to capture
wild black bears, which may be a measure taken out of necessity to protect the
lives and property of the people in the area where the incident occurred.
According
to incomplete statistics from professional departments, Heilongjiang Province
is one of the provinces with more than 1,000 black bears surviving in the wild.
According to the survey, Heilongjiang Province is also a major province for
black bear breeding. The number of farmed black bears is two to three times
that of wild black bears, far exceeding the needs of scientific research and
breeding to expand the black bear population.
The
Black Bear Conservation Area of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green
Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has always been concerned about the fate of the
captured black bears. Volunteers are eagerly looking forward to the captured
black bears regaining their freedom and returning to the wild environment as
soon as possible. They have also been waiting for the release and disposal
results of the local wildlife protection department.
