Occurrence Data of Plagiodera versicolora in Beijing Haidian Park Released on Global Biodiversity Information Facility | CBCGDF GBIF Working Group
In Middle August 2024, the occurrence data of Plagiodera versicolora recorded in Haidian Park, Beijing was released to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). The data was recorded by citizen scientist to the GBIF Working Group of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF). Thanks to Mr. ZHANG Zuoshuang, former director of Beijing Botanical Garden and vice chairman of the fourth council of CBCGDF for assisting in species identification.
The Plagiodera versicolora is a beetle that likes to eat willow leaves. They are small in size, usually only 3-6 mm long, with a charming blue-green or blue-black back sparkling in the sun.
The
Plagiodera versicolora has four stages in its
life: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The appearance of their larvae and adults is
quite different. After hatching, the larvae are gray-brown, with small black
protrusions all over their bodies. They have soft bodies, move slowly, and like
to live in groups. They gnaw on leaves in groups, eating the flesh of the
leaves until only a thin layer of veins remains, as if they were hollowed out.
The Global
Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) is an international network and data
infrastructure funded by governments worldwide, aiming to provide open access
to data on all forms of life on Earth. The China Biodiversity Conservation and
Green Development Foundation is a data publisher of GBIF. Since joining GBIF in
2018, the Chinese association has been committed to serving scientists, citizen
scientists, and conservationists, contributing to biodiversity informatics with
the collective efforts from science community and citizen scientists from
China.
