XU Jing: Strong Support from Scientific Data Is a Key Element | CBCGDF Symposium on Promoting the China National Strategic Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation

On March 29, 2024, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) hosted the first symposium on "Promoting the National Strategic Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation " in Beijing. A total of 32 speakers, including 92 participants from government departments, enterprises, NGOs, academia, indigenous peoples and local communities, and youth representatives, attended the event, with over a hundred people actively responding and signing the Peoples Participation Movements initiative.

Mr. XU Jing, a senior engineer at the China Academy of Environmental Sciences, participated in the meeting and delivered a keynote speech with main contents as follows:

I think the most important point in the biodiversity conservation strategic action plan is to strengthen scientific support for implementation and realizing these goals.

First of all, the 2050 long-term goal proposes changing trends of diversity of ecosystem species and genetic resources, which cannot be separated from the support of solid scientific data and information.

There are three key points that need to be done. The first aspect is to carry out a biodiversity survey to find out how many species, how many ecosystems there are in the world, the country or a region, as well as the richness of genetic resources; the second is to understand what are the threats to biodiversity; the third is to assess the status of biodiversity from a scale.

The second aspect is to carry out long-term monitoring work, conduct dynamic monitoring of key biological groups and key species, and obtain species change data for ten to twenty years or even longer.

The third aspect is to monitor changes in the ecological environment and carry out surveys and long-term monitoring.

Based on the above work, I have five suggestions.

First, we need to promote biodiversity background investigation and research;

Second, we need to promote long-term monitoring;

Third, we need to promote interdisciplinary exchanges;

Fourth, we must strengthen national publicity and education;

Finally, I hope CBCGDF will raise funds through more channels to promote biodiversity conservation.
