What Is Ecology? Why Should We Build an Ecological Community?丨ZHOU Talks about the 4th Civilization (Lecture 282)

On April 21, 2024, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), was invited to Qiandao Lake, Zhejiang Province to participate in the "Ecological Community Construction and Qiandao Lake Special Ecological Functional Zone Green Development Symposium & Foundation Ceremony of the Federation of Qiandao Lake Ecological Community.

He made the following speech based on biodiversity, ecological civilization and green development:

Currently, a popular saying is "Can birds perceive the quality of the ecological environment?" However, I think birds cannot really judge the quality of the ecological environment. Birds will only seek out food sources based on their own needs. Therefore, some regions organize experts to study the feeding habits of birds and feed them according to their preferences. This practice still exists in parks and other places, but it is extremely risky behavior. According to the latest research report, scientists have discovered that the avian influenza virus is transmitted among cattle, but it is still unclear how the virus is transmitted. In some areas, because insects attract a large number of wild birds, these birds may carry a variety of highly lethal avian influenza viruses and then spread to humans. This situation is more likely to cause serious zoonosis problems. Although this risk is not yet widespread, in some areas there are still some areas that insist that the quality of the ecological environment can be judged through the perception of birds, which is a big problem.

In terms of biodiversity investigation, the norms that some professional researchers refer to mainly originate from industrial civilization. However, if biodiversity investigations are conducted based on the norms produced by these industrial civilizations, it may cause serious harm to the local ecological environment. For example, it will cause the death of a large number of nationally protected animals in a short period of time and destroy biodiversity resources.

Biodiversity conservation regulations dominated by industrial civilization often focus too much on human development and utilization of natural resources, while ignoring the balance and stability of nature itself. This puts excessive pressure on the environment. We should advocate and implement reasonable measures to protect the ecological environment and biodiversity.

There are three main reasons for protecting the ecological environment:

1.We are now entering the sixth mass extinction; 2.The problem of biodiversity loss is intensifying; 3.The impact of climate change on biodiversity. Protecting the ecological environment can maintain biodiversity, thereby ensuring the health and stability of the ecosystem.

The extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago was a major event in the history of the earth, marking the end of the Cretaceous period and the beginning of the Cenozoic Era. Today, the earth is experiencing the severe challenge of the sixth mass extinction of organisms. This is not accidental, but due to the impact of human activities, the ecological environment has been severely damaged and the survival of many species has been threatened.

Since the 1990s, scientists have reached a consensus on this issue and signed the Convention on Biological Diversity, followed by the launch of the first United Nations Millennium Plan, which aimed to achieve the 15-year Sustainable Development Goals. Although 15 years have passed, the rate of biodiversity loss has not slowed down as expected, but has shown an accelerating trend. This means that our work in protecting biodiversity has not achieved the expected results, but has gone backwards. We must take more powerful measures to protect our ecological environment and avoid the tragedy of the sixth mass extinction.

Through the construction of ecological communities, we scientifically standardize and guide human behavior, and promote the sustainable development of man and nature.
