Leading Fossil Energy Carbon Trade Company Visits CBCGDF and Seeking Advises on Biodiversity-friendly Development

On April 24, 2024, the leadership team of a prominent Chinese fossil energy carbon sink company visited the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) for discussions with Secretary General Jinfeng Zhou and the Climate Change Working Group.

During the meeting, Secretary General Jinfeng Zhou suggested that the company should increasingly adopt Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for initiatives such as ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices and carbon offset transactions. He emphasized the importance of synergistic benefits between biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation, citing the example of "elephant conservation leading to increased forest carbon sinks."

Secretary General Zhou's proposal aligns with the concept of NbS, which emphasizes leveraging natural ecosystems and biodiversity to address environmental challenges while promoting sustainable development. The idea is to harness the interconnected benefits of biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, and climate resilience through strategic interventions in natural landscapes.

The specific example of elephant conservation highlights how preserving key species can contribute to the health and productivity of forest ecosystems. Elephants play a vital role in maintaining forest structure and seed dispersal, which ultimately enhances carbon storage capacity. By conserving habitats that support elephant populations, not only is biodiversity safeguarded, but carbon sequestration potential is also enhanced.
