CBCGDF-BCON Put forward 3 Recommendations on "General Technical Requirements for Monitoring Quantitative Indicators of Cotton Plant Type and Ripeness (Draft for Comments)"

The Secretariat of the Technical Committee for Standardization of Agricultural Informatisation of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs recently issued a letter on soliciting opinions on the "General Technical Requirements for Monitoring Quantitative Indicators of Cotton Plant Type and Ripeness (Draft for Comments)" and other agricultural industry standards, and the "Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON)" Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has positively responded to the call, and after careful study, the following 3 recommendations have been put forward for reference.

Recommendation 1: In the "3 Terminology and Definitions Section", add a term on "cotton".

For example

Cotton refers to cultivars of Gossypium hirsutum L. or Gossypium barbadense L.

Recommendation 2: in the section "Quantification of plant type":

4.1 Photosynthetically active radiation sensor selection

It is recommended that calibration requirements for photosynthetically active radiation sensors be added, e.g.: (1) Sensors should be calibrated periodically, not more than one year. (2) Calibration should be carried out using a standard light source or a national metrological standard.

4.2 Selection of Monitoring Points

It is recommended that the provisions for the selection of the surrounding environment of the monitoring point should be supplemented, for example: (1) The perimeter of the monitoring point should be free of shading objects, such as trees and buildings. (2) The soil/surface around the monitoring point should be level and free from obvious potholes.

4.3 Data Collection

It is recommended to supplement the photosynthetically active radiation monitoring method, such as: (1) The photosynthetically active radiation sensor should be installed perpendicular to the ground. (2) Photosynthetically active radiation sensors should be cleaned regularly to ensure measurement accuracy.

4.4 Data structure and calculation

In this part, it is recommended to supplement the data structure, for example, the data should contain sensor number information. The data should also contain information on the time of sampling.

In addition, it is recommended that the scope of application of the standard be clarified, for example, "This standard applies to the monitoring of plant type and ripeness of cotton quantitative cultivation, and does not apply to other crops."

Recommendation 3: in the section of the appendix, it is recommended that:

(1) In the part of "spatial statistical tools", it is recommended to add the scope of application of spatial statistical tools, such as adding a sentence: spatial statistical tools can be applied to the analysis of the spatial distribution of photosynthetically active radiation data of cotton populations, detection of outliers, trend prediction and so on.

2) 3/8 Extended Simpson Method

In this part, it is recommended to analyse the calculation accuracy of the 3/8 Extended Simpson Method, e.g., "It is possible to use different grid sizes for calculations and compare the differences in the calculation results." The scope of application could also be added, e.g., "It is suitable for calculating the photosynthetically active radiation in a regularly shaped measurement area."
