CBCGDF Volunteers Stand for 10 Hours to Combat Illegal Capture of Wild Birds

On April 13, 2024, a group of five volunteers from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) came to the Flower, Bird and Fish Market in Changchun City, Jilin Province. Volunteers observe whether there are illegal hunting and illegal trading of birds, fish and other wild animals traded in the market.

During the observation process, the volunteers found that the perpetrator Zhang was suspected of illegal hunting. In order to find out more, the volunteers secretly observed him. After 10 hours of squatting, the volunteers found that Zhang returned to his bird house. Therefore, the volunteers immediately reported to the Changchun Green Park Public Security Bureau.

The public security police seized 16 blackbirds (national second-level protected wild animals), 26 spicy-billed finches, and 16 common rosefinch that were about to be sold at Zhang's home. The items involved in the case have been seized by the public security department in accordance with the law, and the case has been handed over to the local police station for further investigation.

At the same time, another group of volunteers found more than 240 dead birds, including 20 common nuthatch (Sitta europaea), 8 waxwings (Bombycilla garrulus), more than 30 silver-throated long-tailed tits (Aegithalos caudatus), as well as coal tits and great tits at the home of a certain community. More than 100 dead bodies were left. The number is astonishing!

At present, the case has been handed over to the Food, Drug and Environmental Crime Investigation Brigade of the local Public Security Bureau for further investigation.
