Tens of Thousands of Sand Martin Returned to Hutuo River this Spring |CCAfa of CBCGDF

April is Sand Martin (Riparia riparia) nesting season. The Shijiazhuang Sand Martin Reserve of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) welcomed the first batch of sand swallows to "go home" to nest this year on April 12, numbering about 10,000. Now, half a month has passed, another batch of Sand Martin have come back one after another. According to estimates by volunteers at the reserve, the total number has reached about 20,000, and it is expected that the number may reach 30,000 or 40,000 in May.

Sand Martin, they usually nest and live on sandy cliffs on the banks of rivers, lakes, etc., and mainly feed on various insects.

Sand Martin was not very famous locally, in 2020, because Shijiazhuang Yuanshi County wanted to renovate the Huaihe River channel, it planned to bulldoze several sand islands where Sand Martin nested. Finally, with the efforts of CBCGDF and other parties, successfully preserved two larger sand islands for Sand Martin to nest. Afterwards, Sand Martin nesting habitats were discovered in other places. This year, Sand Martin is back again, and more people came to watch and clock in. Some media came here to report on it.
