SHAN Shengdao: Thoughts on Biodiversity Conservation in the Practice of the "Two Mountains" Theory in Yu village, Anji county | CBCGDF Symposium on Promoting the China National Strategic Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation

In response to the initiative "Be Part of the Plan" for the 2024 International Day for Biological Diversity issued by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) launched the "Peoples Participation Movements (PPM)" to respond CBD's call and to support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

On March 29, 2024, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) hosted the first symposium on "Promoting the National Strategic Action Plan for Biodiversity Conservation " in Beijing. A total of 32 speakers, including 92 participants from government departments, enterprises, NGOs, academia, indigenous peoples and local communities, and youth representatives, attended the event, with over a hundred people actively responding and signing the Peoples Participation Movements initiative.

Professor SHAN Shengdao, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Zhejiang University of Science and Technology, participated in the meeting and shared his thoughts on biodiversity conservation in the practice of the "Two Mountains" Theory in Yu village, Anji county, Zhejiang Province as follows:

First, we must pay more attention to the coordinated promotion of beautiful countryside construction and biodiversity conservation. These two sides are closely related, mutually supportive and influencing each other. The construction of beautiful countryside can maintain the balance of the ecosystem, and biodiversity conservation in return is also an important foundation.

Second, it is crucial to cultivate young people’s awareness of environment and biodiversity protection. In Yu village, Anji county, we have done a lot of work in this field. For example, we have built an ecological practice demonstration site, created a youth education base, and built a youth ecological awareness cultivation system.

Third, to create a rich research experience in natural observation of biodiversity, modern agriculture, etc., and attract college students, primary and secondary school students to participate in research activities. In 2023, there were more than 2,000 batches of students having come to Yu village for research.

Fourth, to attach importance to promoting the international spread of new civilization and biodiversity protection. We must promote the institutionalized and systematic ecological education model to the world, actively participate in international biodiversity conservation work, carry out international cooperation, and promote successful cases of biodiversity conservation.
