How to Effectively Avoid Bird Collisions with Power Lines? | CBCGDF Participates in the Seminar on Bird Caring around Poyang Lake Held in Jiangxi Province

In early March this year, the public attached great importance to the death of a white crane colliding with the power line in the Wuhan-Nanchang double-circuit 1000kV line project in the section around Poyang Lake. How to carry out emergency prognosis and prevention of this line project has become the focus of attention of all concerned parties.

On the afternoon of April 19, 2024, the State Grid Jiangxi Power Supply Company held the Seminar on Bird Caring around Poyang Lake of the "Wuhan-Nanchang Double-circuit (Road) 1000kV Line Project in Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province. China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) participated in this seminar.

This year's migratory bird migration season has basically ended, but after entering autumn and winter, we will face a new round of migratory bird migration. As the largest wintering place for migratory birds in East Asia, how can Poyang Lake effectively avoid bird collisions?

During the discussion and communication session, the CBCGDF Research Department introduced the "Migratory Bird Lifeline" project that State Grid has been implementing since 2019.

Judging from the relationship between birds and wires on the East Asia-Australasia Flyway, the "Migratory Bird Lifeline", there are seven types of relationships, including bird nesting, fecal flash, wire collision, electric shock, wire pressing, and pecking and other. There are about 30 species of wild birds involved, but the frequency and extent of line collisions alone are lower than what has happened this year on the Wunan line around Poyang Lake. CBCGDF believes that since its implementation, the "Migratory Bird Lifeline" project has received great attention and support from the State Grid and its local companies. It has achieved important results in preventing and controlling bird nesting and guano pollution flash-over. It hopes to strengthen the Wunan Line in the future. Field investigation and research on bird strike sections fills this gap in prevention and control research.
