Building a Greener Future: Insights from Dr. Zhou Jinfeng's Keynote in Qiandao Lake of Zhejiang | Welcoming Earth Day 2024

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng,Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), delivered an insightful keynote speech at the "Ecological Community Development and Qiandao Lake Special Ecological Zone Green Development Seminar" and the inaugural ceremony of the Qiandao Lake Ecological Community Federation in Zhejiang on April 21, 2024.

In his address, Dr. Zhou began by exploring the essence of ecology and underscored its vital importance to both biological organisms and human societies. Drawing on examples such as the confirmed cow-to-cow transmission of avian flu by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the impacts of antibiotics and microplastics, and the environmental effects of laundry activities at island resorts, Dr. Zhou highlighted the direct influence of ecological environments on human health and social stability. He emphasized the significance of bees in maintaining ecological balance and supporting agricultural production, as well as the necessity of protecting biodiversity and the crucial role of standards and regulations in safeguarding endangered species.

During his speech, Dr. Zhou emphasized the importance of scientific approaches in the protection and restoration of natural ecosystems like mangroves. He stressed the need for efficient use of funds in ecological restoration efforts, advocating for natural-based restoration strategies to achieve optimal ecological recovery with minimal investments.

Dr. Zhou pointed out the direct correlation between individual behaviors and the quality of the ecological environment. He cited examples such as the use of rodenticides and insecticides, real estate development, and the disposal of cigarette butts (contributing to plastic pollution) to illustrate the interconnectedness of ecological health and human well-being. Furthermore, he raised concerns about the negative impact of over-tourism on ecosystems and highlighted the challenges posed by technological advancements to environmental sustainability.

Following his discussion on the importance of ecology, Dr. Zhou addressed the question of why we need to prioritize ecological issues. He highlighted global-scale species extinctions (the sixth mass extinction), the Millennium Development Goal 7b, the Aichi Targets, and the current Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) as critical international agreements. His narrative was complemented by vivid examples such as recent extreme climate events like the Dubai rainstorm.

In this talk, Dr. Zhou underscored the significance of the Fourth Civilization in national development strategies and the necessity of balancing technological development with environmental conservation, reflecting the core principles of the sustainable development strategies in China today.

Dr. Zhou's speech at this conference covered the essentiality of ecological environments for human society, the urgency of biodiversity conservation, and the practical applications of the Fourth Civilization ideology. He called for heightened awareness of ecological protection, advocating for harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature, and promoting new civilization as a cornerstone of sustainable human development. Stay tuned for more insights into the path of the new civilization from Dr. Zhou.
