ZHOU Jinfeng Visits the Hong Kong Branch of Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Southern Marine Science and Engineering (Guangzhou) of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology

In early June 2024, Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), visited the Hong Kong Branch of Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Southern Marine Science and Engineering (Guangzhou) of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and was warmly received by Professor QIAN Peiyuan, Founding Director of the Department of Marine Sciences of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The two sides discussed issues such as marine biodiversity protection and marine ecology.

Dr. Zhou Jinfeng introduced the work of the Ocean and Wetlands Working Group of CBCGDF in marine biodiversity protection and marine environmental governance. The CBCGDF Ocean and Wetland Working Group is committed to promoting the protection of ocean connectivity and establishing a global connectivity protection network, and has long been concerned about global marine environmental governance and marine plastic pollution control. The Ocean and Wetlands Working Group has participated in many global conferences related to marine governance to promote global marine environmental governance and marine biodiversity conservation, such as UN Ocean Conference, 2024 Ocean Decade Conference, the Intergovernmental Conference on an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction, and the 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States (SIDS4), meanwhile holding a series of side events.

Professor Qian is an internationally renowned marine molecular ecology and chemical ecologist, and an academic leader in the field of marine bioattachment and anti-attachment research. He holds more than ten international invention patents, including non-toxic marine coating antifouling agents, new antibiotics, and antiviral compounds.  He received a State Natural Science Award of the State Council of China in 2016 for his work on interaction between settling larvae of marine invertebrates and marine biofilm under changing environment. He is currently conducting research on deep-sea cold seep ecosystems to promote the development and utilization of deep-sea resources and the protection of the deep-sea environment.
