CBCGDF Climate Change Working Group Observes the Impact of Climate Change on Animal Migration

Climate change, driven by human activities, has become a significant global concern, affecting various aspects of the natural world, including the migratory patterns of animals. As temperatures rise and weather patterns become increasingly unpredictable, the traditional routes and timing of animal migration are being disrupted, with potentially severe consequences for wildlife populations.

One of the most immediate impacts of climate change on animal migration is the alteration of seasonal cues. Many species rely on environmental signals such as temperature, rainfall, and day length to initiate their migratory journeys. Changes in these cues can lead to early or delayed migrations, which may result in animals arriving at breeding or feeding grounds at the wrong time, and missing critical resources.

Furthermore, the shifting climate can lead to the disappearance or fragmentation of habitats along migration routes. Rising sea levels, increased frequency of extreme weather events, and the spread of invasive species can all contribute to habitat loss. This not only makes the journey more perilous for migrating animals but also reduces the availability of resting and feeding sites, which are essential for their survival.

The impact of climate change on animal migration is also evident in the changing distribution of food sources. For example, the timing of plant flowering and fruiting is shifting due to warmer temperatures, which can affect herbivorous migratory species. Predators that rely on these herbivores for sustenance may also experience food shortages, leading to cascading effects throughout the food chain.
