SHEN Yihang: Conflict between Tibetans and Wild Animals - A Man Encountered 2 Bears in a hotel in Burang County, Nagqu City | CBCGDF OceanWetlands Reports

Recently, a news story about "a man encountered a black bear breaking into a hotel after checking into the hotel" has become a hot search. According to reports, the incident occurred in a hotel in Baiga Township, Burang County, Nagqu City, Tibet Autonomous Region. Two brown bears (Ursus arctos pruinosus) wandered in the hotel corridor, suspected of looking for food. There were 4 to 5 dogs barking outside the door, blocking the door. Many local street-facing houses have installed wire fences or half-meter-high baffles in front of their doors to prevent bears from invading.

The person involved said that in May 2024, when he checked into a hotel in Baiga Township, he was awakened by the barking of dogs in the early morning. When he went out to check, he found two young bears in the hotel. The two bears were cubs and did not fight with the dogs.

The Baiga Township Government responded to the incident. The government operator explained that because some villagers had recently gone up the mountain to collect Cordyceps, the bears were frightened and ran down the mountain into the village. Normally, bears will not actively attack humans unless there is a head-on collision. If tourists are in danger and ask for help, government personnel on duty will rush to the scene to provide assistance as soon as possible.

The brown bear (Ursus arctos pruinosus) is a subspecies of brown bear unique to China. It is a national second-class protected animal and lives in the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. As a representative species of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the Tibetan brown bear is large in size and has unique gray-blue hair, so it is often called a blue bear. As a top predator, the Tibetan brown bear plays an important role in the food chain, and its foraging behavior and habitat selection have a profound impact on the ecosystem.
