Tangshan Volunteers' Environmental Action on World Oceans Day | CBCGDF Reduce & Pick-up Plastics Working Group

On the special day of the 16th World Oceans Day and the 17th China Ocean Day on 8 June 2024, volunteers from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Tangshan organised an environmental activity with the theme of "Protecting the Earth's Heart" at Qinglong Lake Park in Lubei District, Tangshan. At the beginning of the activity, the volunteers discussed the significance of World Oceans Day and the current situation of marine pollution, especially the harm of plastic pollution to the marine ecosystem. They believed that as Tangshan people, they had the responsibility to protect the ocean and prevent pollution.

Afterwards, the volunteers picked up their tools and started to pick up waste in the grass and other places along the lakeshore. After the activity, the volunteers sorted, weighed, counted and recorded the waste they collected.

A total of 2.4kg of plastic waste was picked up this time, the main source of which was food plastic waste discarded by tourists. Specific classification found that the beverage plastic is the most, accounting for 73% of the total, including more products of Binglu, Wahaha and Wanglaoji. These bottles are made of PET, which is not resistant to high temperatures, and repeated use may be harmful to the human body and cause serious environmental pollution.

Finally, special thanks to Mr Fu Biao and the volunteer team for their hard work. Through this activity, the volunteers not only made practical contributions to environmental protection but also enhanced their understanding of the hazards of plastic pollution and deepened their sense of urgency to protect marine ecology.
