CBCGDF Urges Dalian to Halt Seven-Year Fly-Control Operation to Protect Biodiversity and Public Health

Recently, the Political Research Office of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) wrote for the third time to the Dalian Municipal Government and the relevant executive departments, suggesting that the aerial application of pesticides to urban forests in urban areas to prevent and control pests and diseases (the “fly-control operation”), which had been implemented for seven consecutive years, should be halted.

The CBCGDF's Political Research Office had previously written to the Dalian Municipal Government in 2021 and 2023, proposing the suspension of the Fly Defence Operation, but failed to receive a positive response.

Fly-control operations have been conducted annually from June to August since 2017, and large-scale spraying using chemical pesticides such as thiamethoxam has seriously damaged the ecological balance, negatively affecting biodiversity such as insects and birds, as well as posing a potential threat to the health of residents.

The CBCGDF's Political Research Office suggested stopping the large-scale spraying operations and conducting field surveys instead, and formulating environmentally friendly practice programmes based on the results of the surveys.

It is important to scientifically assess the actual effects and environmental impacts of fly control operations. An integrated management approach that is suitable for local urban forests, to achieve both ecological protection and pest control goals.
