Zhou Jinfeng Delivered a Keynote Speech at the Carbon Neutral Sustainable Development Forum

On 22 June 2024, Dr Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), was invited to participate in the Carbon Neutral Sustainable Development Forum organised by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology Beijing Alumni Association. Dr Zhou Jinfeng gave a keynote speech on What is Sustainable Development?

The serious challenge of global climate change has made achieving carbon neutrality an international consensus, government has clearly set the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 and 2060 and is striving to promote a comprehensive green transformation of economic and social development. The Carbon Neutral and Sustainable Development Forum organised by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Beijing Alumni Association aims to enhance the understanding of carbon neutrality and sustainable development among HKUST alumni and all sectors of the community.

Dr Zhou Jinfeng first introduced the significance of biodiversity for sustainable development. He states that the Earth is now entering its sixth mass extinction, this time at a faster rate than when the dinosaurs went extinct, and that this rate is still increasing after decades. We are like sitting in a car hurtling towards a cliff, and a few are aware of the situation, while most are still unaware that instead of slowing down, the car is speeding up.

To change this reality, those who are aware of the situation want to choose a new path, one that can be sustained rather than going off the cliff in a very short time. The idea of sustainable development is based on this.

Dr Zhou Jinfeng then mentioned that the United Nations set the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, which include 17 targets and 169 sub-targets aimed at addressing issues such as poverty, inequality and climate change on a global scale.

Peak carbon dioxide emissions refer to emissions peaking, while carbon neutrality is zero emissions of all greenhouse gases. Dr Zhou Jinfeng pointed out that the consequences of a 1.5°C rise in global temperature are very serious. For example, a billion snow crabs died in Alaska because of temperature of the water increased. If the water temperature rises by another 1.5°C, corals will die on a large scale, and so will other organisms that depend on them.

ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) is a comprehensive analysis carried out by investors to ensure the safety of their investments. However, ESG is fundamentally about the impact on dual carbon and biodiversity. Dr Zhou Jinfeng mentioned that the traditional term "common but differentiated responsibilities" should be transformed into "carbon equality".

Finally, Dr Zhou Jinfeng emphasized that sustainable development is not just simply a slogan, but a genuine challenge that we must confront seriously. CBCGDF's goal is to advance biodiversity and sustainable development, and to share the expertise and technology with people from different fields, fostering new connections and working together towards sustainable development goals.
