Sara Platto, CBCGDF BASE Secretary-General Published an Article Titled “I Have Witnessed the Steady Development of Animal Welfare in China” in the Journal International Talent
Recently, Sara Platto, Secretary-General of the Biological and Scientific Ethics Committee (BASE) of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) published an article titled “I Have Witnessed the Steady Development of Animal Welfare in China” in the journal International Talent.
She stated in the article, “For the past 17 years, I have been working in China to promote animal welfare, both within and outside academia, for different animal species, including pets, captive wild animals, and farm animals. In general, the development of animal welfare in China has been a gradual process. From the early introduction of the concept to the significant progress made in recent decades, the field has made great progress. As China's economy develops, people have begun to pay more attention to the source of the animal products they consume. In addition, caring for animals and protecting the environment have become important themes in China's sustainable development. Animal welfare, especially farm animal welfare, has gradually gained political, economic and social significance in China. China's livestock production and consumption have leapt to the world's leading position, and the resulting increased demand for food has put pressure on the development of the livestock industry and the food system. Therefore, improving animal welfare and promoting the sustainable development of the food system has become significantly more important in China at the political and economic levels.”
Dr. Sara Platto is an expert in animal behavior, welfare and veterinary medicine. She is currently an associate professor at the School of Life Sciences at Jianghan University. She won the 2020 Chinese Government’s Friendship Award.
