What Kind of Literature/Technology/Society/Life Do We Need? | ZHOU Talks about the Fourth Civilization | From the Caspian Sea to China

Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Secretary General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), gave a keynote speech at the academic seminar "From the Caspian Sea to China: Literature, Technology, and Social Life". He discussed literature, technology, society, and life around the development of human civilization.

To explore what literature, technology, and social life are, we need to first understand what civilization is. Literature, technology, society, and life are the most important parts of civilization. Human society has gone through primitive civilization, agricultural civilization, and industrial civilization. During the primitive civilization period, humans relied on natural resources to survive, with gathering and hunting as their main lifestyle. With the rise of agriculture, humans began to plant and breed. Agricultural civilization brought a more stable food supply, but also caused problems such as land degradation and water resource depletion. The advent of the Industrial Revolution marked a leap in human productivity and technological level. Large-scale industrial production met the needs of the growing population, but it also brought serious consequences such as air pollution, water quality deterioration, and ecosystem collapse.

Today we are going to start the fourth civilization. Why? Because in the primitive civilization, human society took natural things to feed itself, picking fruits and hunting, but these were not enough for human survival, so humans began to advance science and technology and opened up a new civilization. Agriculture is mainly based on planting and breeding, so agricultural civilization is not enough to feed humans, and then industrial civilization was opened up. Industrial civilization is very great. It feeds 7 billion people on today's earth, which is a height that has never been achieved in the history of the earth. However, industrial civilization has also fundamentally destroyed the only habitat for humans. We humans must open up a new civilization. We call it the fourth civilization. Some Western scientists call it a new civilization, but no matter what the name is, humans must open up a new lifestyle.

Facing the current environmental challenges, the fourth civilization is not only about protecting the environment, but also a new lifestyle and development model. It emphasizes the harmonious coexistence of humans and nature, and pursues sustainable development of economy, society and ecology. The core concept of the fourth civilization is to respect nature, protect ecology, reduce consumption and waste, and achieve this goal through scientific and technological innovation and institutional reform.

Opening up the fourth civilization means changing production, consumption and lifestyle, and promoting green development and low-carbon transformation. This is not only a demand for environmental protection, but also an inevitable choice for the development of human society. Through the development of science and technology and the reform of social systems, we have the opportunity to create a healthier, fairer and more sustainable future while protecting our home planet.

The fourth civilization is a new direction for the development of human society. It requires us to re-examine and adjust our relationship with nature and find a path for the common prosperity of mankind and the earth. In the process of globalization, the languages and concepts of different civilizations are getting closer and closer. As a global development direction, the fourth civilization provides hope and guidance for the sustainable future of all mankind.

By opening up the fourth civilization, we can not only cope with the current ecological challenges, but also leave a better and more sustainable world for future generations. This requires the joint efforts and actions of countries and all sectors of society around the world to jointly build a new era of harmonious coexistence between man and nature.
